Evie Miller
The journey from the Hooverville slums to the opulent penthouses of Fifth Avenue is long, and though Evie Miller’s beauty betrays no sign of it, each step is etched deep within her. Leaving home at fifteen, she quickly learned that the most powerful safeguard is money—and the more, the better.

A brief foray into vaudeville caught the eye of Pandini, who recognised her rare gift for subtly extracting information. In 1931, opportunities for women were scarce, but ambition could carve a path where none existed. And Evie is a quick learner.

She has risen far—but now, with her loyalties tested and danger closing in, she must decide where she truly belongs.

Lighting her cigarette, she let a wisp of smoke escape from her glossed lips. ‘When a man looks at you, he sees an equal. When he looks at me, he sees a pretty face. Being underestimated can be an advantage. No one notices the furniture, and men love to talk.’
